Kyle Kaulback
Car: 1969 Lotus 61 Formula Ford
Car: 1970 Lotus 69 Formula 2

Whether it's a street car, a race car, a bicycle or who knows what else, if Kyle owns it, it's a Lotus. Great cars, always well driven by Kyle. Oh, by the way, if you ever need to know the difference between a Lotus 23 and a 23B, Kyle is your man.

Notes About The Lotus Type 61Mx
The Lotus Type 61 Formula Ford was the final evolution of a Lotus design that debuted in 1961 as the Lotus Type 20 Formula Junior.  Throughout the decade of the 60’s the design was refined through Types 22, 31,41, 51 and finally the 61.  It is a mild steel tubular spaceframe with steel floor from firewall to scuttle.  Bodywork is fiberglass and designed to mimic the wedge shaped Lotus Type 56 turbine Indycar.  In it’s original design the body work encompassed three sections, and undertray, an engine cover, and the nosepiece/cockpit surround.  Suspension was carried over from the previous Type 51C.  The designation of Mx came about as partly a marketing ploy – the chassis plates also designate them as F3 chassis – and an attempt to reduce drag by cutting down the bodywork and losing the engine cover.

Kyle’s car, chassis 61Mx/F3/214, was sold by Lotus Components to an SCCA racer who campaigned it for several years.  It was restored to original specification in the early 90’s by Bill Dolson Racing and subsequently turned over to Powerslide Motorports for ongoing race prep and track support.  It is unique in that the numbers on the chassis/chassis plate/engine cover/ and Hewland gearbox all match the original factory records.  It is also one of the most original specification 61’s in existence.  61Mx/F3/214 is actively campaigned in vintage racing and regularly takes class wins with Kyle at the wheel.

Notes About The Lotus Type 69
The Lotus Type 69 was one of the last customer racing cars that Lotus were to offer, followed only by the Type 70 Formula 5000.  The Type 69 was an evolution of the Type 59, and like the Type 59 was available in numerous specifications.  In fact the Type 69 ran in period as Formulas 1, 2, 3, B, Atlantic, and Ford.  The Chassis was available in 3 basic levels.  Formula Ford was a standard Formula Ford specification steel space frame with steel wheels, Formula Ford specification tires and of course the Formula Ford motor with Hewland gearbox.  The next level added stressed aluminum side pods and additional stressed panels, front and rear wings, and motors and wheel/tire combinations to suit formulas B, 3, Atlantic, and 2.  The highest specification was the factory Formula 2 car, still with a steel frame, but now with full stressed aluminum panels to make it a semi-monocoque and numerous addition tweaks to set it apart from the customer cars.

Kyle’s car chassis 71/69/5FB was on the Lotus stand at the 1971 Motor Racing Show in London.  It was in Formula B specification with a Lotus twin-cam engine.  It was destined for Canadian Craig Hill who was factory backed and sponsored by Castrol GTX.  He campaigned it in Formula B in Canada and the US with numerous wins to his credit.  After a succession of owners it was returned to England where it was restored to Formula 2 Specification with a Cosworth 1600cc BD powerplant with Lucas mechanical fuel injection.  After running several years in European Historic Formula 2 it returned to North America to Kyle’s stewardship.  With Kyle as pilot it competes in vintage races against much more modern machinery and regularly finished at or near the front, with overall wins at the VARAC Mosport event and Brian Redman’s Jefferson 500.

Dan Krause
Car: 1972 Elden Formula Ford PH10A

Holger's right hand man at the track. Helps keep the cars race ready and all the drivers happy. (a very tough job indeed!)

He just happens to have to his credit:

  1. 8 years of kart racing experience with many regional and national wins.

  2. Finished the Eastern Skip Barber Formula Dodge Championship with three wins and eleven podium finishes in 16 races.

  3. Three podium finishes in the Skip Barber Formula Dodge National Championship.

Holger Ahl
Car: 1969 Alexis MK 15 Formula Ford

Our fearless leader doesn't get to race very much anymore, but when he does he can still show most of us the way around a track. Holger has been racing and wrenching Formula Fords since the 70's, and there isn't much he hasn't seen or done.

Dennis D'Angelo
Car: 1976 Porsche Carrera
Dennis' wife Nancy probaly did not foresee the level of passion for racing Dennis would develop as a result of the Skip Barber Racing Course she gave him as a birthday present. Dennis immediately went out and bought a Winkelman Formula Ford and jumped into vintage racing with both feet. After one season in that he acquired a 1976 Porsche Carrera which he is still racing today.
